The 2026 Annual Communications Summit (formerly Policy Day) hosted by AMETHIST will be held virtually on May 14th, 2026 from 12-4 pm.

Training Opportunities

AMETHIST hosts a monthly seminar series, featuring content on implementation science, maternal health, and/or community engagement topics. The seminars can feature presentations on pilot research projects or implementation frameworks, panels on topics such as writing IRBs for implementation research, and much more.

The seminar series occurs the first Friday of every month from 1-2pm EST. This series is open to anyone who registers for the event. Notifications about upcoming seminars can be found on this site, as well as in our monthly newsletter. Recordings of past seminars can be found on this page under Past Events, Resources, or on our YouTube Channel

The ISI is a four-day virtual workshop delivered every year by the Penn Implementation Science Center (PISCE). It features foundational lectures, keynote talks, and small group interactive sessions as an introductory “bootcamp” to implementation science (IS). The ISI covers IS terminology, conceptual models and frameworks, and more including a maternal health implementation science track designed with the IMPROVE network in mind

  • 4 and a half day virtual workshop in June
  • This offering is open to the general public, AMETHIST supports attendance for a number of IMPROVE members each year
  • Subscribe to the AMETHIST newsletter for an update when registration and scholarship information becomes available.
  • More information about the ISI is available on the PISCE Website

Each year, two postdoctoral researchers will be funded to support AMETHIST. They will support research skills career development and build capacity for a diverse future of implementation scientists in maternal health through training programs, mentoring and consultation. The postdoctoral fellows will participate in conducting research about the viability of maternal health implementation projects and will support consultation and technical assistance activities of the implementation science hub. The fellows will be responsible for:

  1. Qualitative and quantitative data collection

  1. Qualitative and mixed methods data analysis

  1. Development and execution of implementation science related programming

  1. Drafting of manuscripts

  1. Management of study logistics including organization, administration, data collection and oversight of research assistants.

This opportunity is open to the general public. lCommunications about this opportunity will be sent out to the IMPROVE Centers of Excellence (CoEs) and Community Implementation Programs (CIPs) through email, included in the AMETHIST monthly newsletter, and posted on this page.

Application goes out every 1-2 years in the fall with the position start being July 1 each cycle.

Current Post Docs: Silpa Srinivasulu & Brianna Baker

Each year, 1-2 SUMR students can apply to collaborate with AMETHIST@Penn and will be trained to perform research duties. These projects include IRB document drafting, creation of survey instrument tools, data processing, and data analysis.

This opportunity is open to undergraduate students in the SUMR program. More information about SUMR can be found here

AMETHIST’s YouTube channel serves to assist training and capacity building in implementation science and maternal health research by housing video recordings of our monthly seminars and other media to come.

The workshops and videos can be viewed on our Resources page, or externally on our YouTube Channel

Each year, AMETHIST supports a first year OB/GYN medical student through an 8-week summer research fellowship. The student will conduct an independent research project that utilizes the resources under the AMETHIST and greater IMPROVE network and contributes to a future publication. This position is internal to Penn medical students.

AMETHIST hosts a pre-conference adjunct meeting at the AcademyHealth Conference on the Science of Dissemination and Implementation in Health. The session offers networking with interested researchers in the maternal health implementation research space, as well as an opportunity to hear micro-talks on ongoing research projects.

This session is open to anyone attending the AcademyHealth D&I Conference. To attend, you must preregister through a link that will be available leading up to the conference.

AMETHIST is in partnership with the Penn Implementation Science Center (PISCE) and the Leonard Davis Institute of Health Economics at the University of Pennsylvania (LDI), who each host a variety of independent training events related to implementation science and maternal health equity. Penn's REACH initiative fosters engaging, impactful, and sustainable community-academic partnerships.

IMPROVE-Network Training Opportunities

Maternal Health Implementation Science Physician Research Scholar

Each year, a Maternal Health Implementation Science Physician Research Scholar will be selected to have a unique opportunity to work in partnership with AMETHIST@Penn. This scholar will obtain in-depth training in implementation science, with a focus on its application to maternal health. There will also be the opportunity to perform independent research at the intersection of implementation science and maternal health under the supervision of the Co-Directors of AMETHIST@Penn, Drs. Meghan Lane-Fall and Rebecca Hamm.

This opportunity includes funding for completion of the Implementation Science Certificate Program at the University of Pennsylvania. It also provides research funding for completion of an independent research project focused on the intersection of maternal health and implementation science under the mentorship of AMETHIST and local mentors.

Communications about this opportunity will be sent out to the CoEs through email and included in the AMETHIST@Penn monthly newsletter.

This opportunity is open to physicians (MD or DO) who have completed a residency in Obstetrics & Gynecology and are currently in a Fellowship Program obtaining subspecialty training, or those who have already completed training with or without subspecialty training, and are still within 3 years of their terminal training program. The program is open to physicians at one of the 12 NIH IMPROVE Maternal Health Centers of Excellence, 4 IMPROVE Community Implementation Programs, or at one of the 2 associated Hubs

Maternal Health Implementation Science Nurse Research Scholar

Each Year, a Maternal Health Implementation Science Nurse Research Scholar will be selected to have a unique opportunity to work in partnership with AMETHIST@Penn. This scholar will obtain in-depth training in implementation science, with a focus on application to maternal health. There will also be an opportunity to perform independent research at the intersection of implementation science and maternal health, under the supervision of Co-Lead and Co-Investigator of AMETHIST@Penn, Drs. Rebecca Clark and Amanda Bettencourt.

This opportunity includes funding for completion of the Implementation Science Certificate Program at the University of Pennsylvania. It also provides research funding for completion of an independent research project focused on the intersection of maternal health and implementation science under the mentorship of AMETHIST and local mentors.
